Tim Shaw

William T. (Tim) Shaw is a consultant in cyber-security for industrial control systems. He has over 27 years of experience in design, creation, implementation and support of DCS, SCADA and PLC based control systems for a wide range of energy, utility and industrial markets.

Shaw is well known throughout the industrial process automation field as a pioneer in the development of computer-based automation technologies and an expert on batch process control. He has been involved in a wide range of industrial automation projects in various industry segments, including gas and liquid pipelines; petrochemical processing; food and beverage production; water and waste-water processing; and electric and gas utilities.

Shaw also led the team that developed a secure, TCP/IP based, real-time data acquisition and control system that has been employed by several electric utility ISOs (Independent System Operators) to manage their regional electric power loads. He also developed a high-tech access control system for the Los Alamos National labs, using biometric authentication, sophisticated mantraps and advanced motion detection technologies.

Formerly an Assistant Adjunct Professor of Computer Science in the graduate engineering department of Loyola College (Baltimore, MD) for nearly ten years, Shaw continues to teach short courses and seminars on a range of technical topics including computer operating systems, networking and cyber-security. Besides authoring numerous technical articles and papers during a long and distinguished career, he also authored a book on batch process control.

Shaw holds a BS in Electrical and Computer Engineering; an MS in Engineering Science; and a PhD in Computer Science. He is a senior member of the ISA (Instrumentation, Systems & Automation) Society; a member of the IEEE; and has attained a CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) certification in cyber-security.
